Maybe Women Should Run the Web!

We all know that the idea of business on the web came on with a roar and now lies whimpering and licking its wounds in the safety of the shadows. Who was the enemy? Who or what was it that clawed and scraped the potential of online business so brutally that early enthusiasts are now seen as foolish, wild- eyed dreamers? What brought down an idea that was bigger and more powerful than a raging beast at full roar?

The Greed Monster. Greed and fear always do this to us.

Greed drives the spammers that clog the in-boxes of even the most casual email user. They promise instant gratification of our every desire -- financial or erotic. Just send your money.

Greed drove the venture capitalists that dumped huge amounts of cash into poorly conceived ideas for internet businesses. Early VC losses can be directly tied to the greed factor in investing. "Gimme your money and fast!"

Greed drives the multi-level marketing programs that quickly sprouted wings online as more promises of instant wealth were strewn across the web. "Just send your money, hurry while there is still time to get in on the ground floor!"

Greed drove the corporate behemoths to launch "web initiatives" so they might beat their competition online. "Hurry before our competition kills us and drains our profits!" But to what end?

So now that we know the enemy. What do we do to vanquish him? I use the masculine here because it evokes the warrior image. Maybe the failure is in applying traditional male attributes to the web. Power, fighting, hunting and killing don't work on the web. What does work?

Co-operation, community building, helpfulness and sharing. All attributes that are applied most often to women and are seen as feminine qualities.

We may be better off seeing this medium as a feminine one. When looking for valid business models online, just take a look at what works and who is making it work.

Membership models proliferate online where sites seek our opinions and want us to "join in." Most successful web sites encourage visitor participation and feedback in discussion forums.

Ebay asks for ratings of active sellers from the buyers of their products. The highest ratings earn more business. Amazon publishes reader reviews of purchased books and encourages you to "Be the first to review this book!" People read those reviews and appreciate them.

Personalization and community building are incorporated into all of the major portals. Discussion forums are available at every one of the major online publishers. The web encourages communication and sharing of knowledge - not hoarding, hiding and greedily seeking to outsmart the consumer.

America Online pioneered in community building and was rewarded with rapid growth and customer loyalty. I believe they have lost their way now as greed leads them to keep a fence around their technology, refusing to allow their AIM instant messaging system to be accessed by non-members.

Greed, exclusion, proprietary systems and monopolistic megacorporations are giving way to community, inclusion, open source code and peer-to-peer sharing and swapping of information. As long as old ideas are applied to the web it will go nowhere. Napster was killed by the monster.

Online content providers are talking "Digital Rights Management" and seeking ways to "monetize content", which simply means monopolizing information. Scarcity doesn't work online. Community building, cooperation and being helpful, open, giving and sharing does work.

Businesses that work those traditionally feminine ideas into their online vision will be the winners on the web.

How often have you attended internet shows recently where the major sponsor booth is absolutely swimming in interested new customers? Most recent internet trade conferences have been sparsely attended and major sponsors have suffered severely limited interest in their new offerings in both hardware and software. Seybold San Francisco 2001 bucked that trend last week as both major sponsors (Apple and Adobe) easily filled presentation after presentation through their four days of presence on the trade show floor at the Moscone Center.

This was one week after terrorist attacks decimated the travel industry. While not matching previous show attendance, this show attracted enthusiastic crowds wandering through two massive halls. Keynote addresses were noticeably below expected turnout with far less than half of the available seats filled. Except the keynote opened by Apple CEO Steve Jobs, which attracted a nearly full house to hear of improvements in speed and useability to the OS X operating system. Jobs had planned to be in Paris and appear "live via satellite" to this show from Europe, but made a surprise appearance in San Francisco due to the cancellation of the show in France.

The products of Apple and Adobe attract a very different following and market segment - publishing, design and creative professionals. The Apple installation included demonstrations of the new OS X operating system upgrade. Each time I entered the showroom floor over 3 days of attendance I witnessed over- flow crowds filling the demonstration area. Apple hardware displays offered everything from iMacs to Mac OS X Server equipped G4 supersystems. These also were swamped with show attendees seeking demonstrations and asking questions of the sales reps.

In July I attended the eBusiness Expo held at the San Jose Convention Center and watched IBM sales reps wander back and forth around their monstrous installation on the trade show floor talking with each other because there were no attendees to pitch to. Same at the GE Global Exchange booth, and the Siebel Systems booth. (See coverage at the following address)

Seybold followed the trend of "convergence" seen throughout the internet industry over the last year. Device convergence in endless discussion as we juggle our Palm Pilots and cell phones and pagers and RIM Blackberries and notebook computers.

The answer seems to be NOT in device convergence but web hosted software that invisibly serves up appropriate content to any device you choose to use. Vendors each touted the ability of their software products to seamlessly talk with short messaging service (SMS) devices or full screen mobile web tablets.

Each offers to present your hardware with whatever it needs to communicate with you. It doesn't matter which you prefer to use, wireless web enabled phones or proprietary Microsoft PDA's. The universal goal appears to be delivering content without regard to how it will be viewed. Clearly there are limits to this approach, such as delivering images to Palm Pilots, but the clear trend is even stretching toward that end.

The dominant theme at Seybold seemed to be Digital Rights Management (DRM) in which everyone struggles with how to rein in the threat posed by easily broken encryption schemes. But how do you make information available to multiple devices while at the same time attempting to keep information under lock and key? Ah, now the fun starts. Software engineers will no doubt be working overtime on this issue as publishing goes through one of the most profound changes in, oh, three or four centuries.

While we are struggling with making information available to everyone on all devices, publishing companies and copyright holders work overtime to limit distribution - or at the very least, limit FREE distribution of "owned" information.

One of the best attended show sessions was that on ebooks and epublishing where competing vendors discussed the merit of "Open e-Book" (OeB) standards and extensible markup language (XML) as a starting point to delivering content to multiple devices in multiple formats -- PDF, HTML and many proprietary hardware variants.

Several hundred sessions were offered in an extensive five day line-up to review current trends in design and production of both online and print publishing production. These two very different and often incompatible areas are looking for ways to merge and compliment each other.

As newspaper publishers all seek to move their print content online, they realize that customers expect more current and up-to-date information on the web. These newspapers are used to the 24 hour news cycle, but now their readers seek instant updates to breaking news stories online. One of the most interesting sessions offered at Seybold this year was abruptly arranged following last week's terrorist attacks - to address how the web handled breaking news coverage.

Panelists included representatives from CBS Marketwatch & USA Today online versions beside two popular weblogs discussing differences in web coverage between major media conglomerates and "amateur" web journalists. Once again, publishing David versus Goliath.

There was no concensus reached on one being better than the other, but universal agreement that the resulting information flow was much richer and more widely available to the public because of the web. This show rated an A+ at a very difficult time for the economy and web business. I'd also say that I'm grateful that Seybold Seminars elected bravely to hold it so soon after the attacks that cancelled so many other events.

Nightshade: China Bayles #16 (China Bayles Mystery)

Nightshade: China Bayles #16 (China Bayles Mystery)
China's herb shop and catering business may be thriving, but she's still reeling from her father's death, and not even remotely interested in her half-brother Miles's investigation into that event. China's husband, on the other hand, has no such qualms. And when fate forces her to get involved as well, China realizes it's time to bring the past to light-or else it will haunt her the rest of her life.

But China and McQuaid discover that Miles may have been keeping as many secrets as he seemed determined to uncover. How deep do the layers of secrecy go? And who has a stake in concealing the truth after sixteen years?

Customer Review: Best of the Best!

If you haven't read the China Bayles books - please start, but NOT here. This is the culmination of the mystery surrounding China's family and it is the best of all of her stories. The characters are fleshy, the story line is full of mystery - just enough of Ruby and plenty of food. Your mouth will water with the succulent dishes AND the murder mystery. Ms. Albert is a superb writer. I look forward to each book and try to take my time - but in a day or two the read is over and I am waiting again for the next book. Buy the first book and don't stop until Nightshade. This is an excellent series of books written by a skilled author.

Customer Review: tea time

Recently, China Boyles learned she had an illegitimate half-brother Miles sired by her father on his secretary Laura who worked in his law firm. He never knew the man he called uncle was really his dad until his biological father died leading to Miles finding letters written to his mother. They implied he was in danger and so were Laura and Miles. Miles believes that the car accident that killed his father was in reality a murder.

China is not interested in reconnecting with her past to find out if her father was murdered but her husband McQuaid, now a private detective, is very interested for numerous reasons. When Miles thinks he located the car that his father died in, he asks McQuaid to meet him at a designated spot. When he doesn't show up, China and McQuaid learn he was killed in the garage where he parks his car for work. McQuaid is determined to carry on with the investigation and when he goes to the location of where the car is supposed to be the woman who is holding on to it looks like she is dying from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. McQuaid is sure that it was attempted murder and when he pools his information with the info on the tape Laura made that China found, they go to confront someone who might have the answers not knowing that China is in danger of getting shot.

NIGHTSHADE is one of the best books in the China Bayles series. The story is told in the first person POV from the perspectives of China and McQuaid allowing fans for the first time to understand how he thinks. They will love what they learn especially how he sees his wife and his feelings about her that he is too macho to articulate. The mystery is well thought out and the killings in the present have roots in the past. Susan Wittig Albert always delivers a fantastic mystery.

Jessica McClintock By Jessica McClintock For Women, Eau De Parfum Spray (3.4 Ounces)

Jessica McClintock By Jessica McClintock For Women, Eau De Parfum Spray (3.4 Ounces)
Utterly Romantic And Feminine, The Jessica Mcclintock Fragrance Is A Delicate White Floral Blend Of Bergamot, Ylang-ylang, Rose, White Jasmine And Lily Of The Valley.

Customer Review: Ideal Romantic Fragrance

Designer Jessica McClintock has outdone herself with this beautiful and memorable fragrance! This lovely floral blend of white jasmine, white roses, and lily of the valley is gentle, whisper soft, and feminine (but not at all powdery), making this perfume perfect for daytime, work, or warm weather wear. The sparkling top notes of lemon and basil leave this perfume youthful, uplifting and refreshing, without being harsh or biting. After application, the scent lingers for the rest of the day, and it tends to have a good deal of throw, so don't be surprised if others comment on your choice of fragrance; however this perfume is very rarely overpowering.

If you're looking for a soft, long lasting, romantic floral perfume reminiscent of sunlight and springtime, you've found it here. This scent is quickly becoming a favorite!

Customer Review: I Love Jessica McClintock

I am totally pleased with the product. I was afraid it would be a knock off or some how watered down. But, it is just wonderful. Just like from the department stores. Jessica McClintock is a product that stays on your skin for hours. Most men love the smell of this product.
