Is Spironolactone The Only Option For Women Over 35 With Acne?
Spironolactone is generally prescribed as an off label acne treatment for women. This drug, though intended to help people with heart problems not zit problems, reduces the production of the hormone androgen. Androgen promotes excess facial oil secretion.
Less oil secretion limits the possibility of having clogged pores and acne flare-ups.
Spironolactone works as an androgen receptor blocker. This drug decreases androgen production in the ovaries and adrenal glands.
Side effects from spironolactone can include breast tenderness and menstrual irregularity.
For this reason, doctors usually add oral contraceptives like Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Estrostephave to compliment acne treatments and ease potential spironolactone side effects. Ironically though, spironolactone is recommended for women who are not candidates for oral contraceptives.
So should a woman over 35 with acne go with spironolactone? According to the American College of Physicians, the answer is No.
In the 2004 May/June edition of the American College of Physicians (ACP) published a medical review of studies that tested the effectiveness of spironolactone for controlling hirsutism, acne, or both in fertile or postmenopausal women. The ACP review found insufficient evidence to recommend spironolactone as an acne treatment.
Nevertheless, Dr. Diane Thiboutot of Pennsylvania State University, Hershey uses spironolactone for female patients with acne accompanied by a suspected endocrine disorder.
For example, when a woman experiences a sudden onset of severe acne or acne that is linked with excessive facial hair growth, irregular menstrual periods, increased libido, dark patches of skin, deepening of the voice, insulin resistance and hair loss, spironolactone may be helpful.
Dr. Thiboutot noted that spironolactone seems to control quite well those cystic-type nodules that they [women] get on their lower face and chin.
Yet Dr. Julie C Harper Dr. Harper of the department of dermatology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham doesnt recommend spironolactone so easily. Only if neither topical retinoids nor antibiotics have not worked for a womans case of acne would Dr. Harper then suggest using spironolactone for women over 35.
Author of Acne Messages, Naweko San-Joyz, says A womans response to androgens is so varied that limiting herself to an androgen blockers like spironolactone certainly does not guarantee a cure, or even a quick treatment.
San-Joyz adds that overproduction of androgens is just one step in a series of potential events that could lead to acne.
Instead of hormonal manipulation with drugs, San-Joyz suggests women with acne regulate this conditional using food, stress control and greater awareness of potential acne triggers like environmental estrogens.
Women with acne have numerous treatments options. If a woman does decide to go with spironolactone, its best to get her prescription filled with her gynecologist rather that her general practitioner.
Its most likely that the gynecologist will be more aware of how a patient may respond to hormonal treatments like spironolactone and oral contraceptives, thus making recovery faster.

Kiss Me, Kate (1948 Original Broadway Cast)
Kiss Me, Kate (1948 Original Broadway Cast)
Opening at the tail end of 1948, Kiss Me, Kate became an instant classic--and amazingly didn't receive a full-scale revival until 1999. All the more reason to revel in its original version. With its cunning play-within-a-play premise (a musical update of The Taming of the Shrew reverberates in backstage feuds), brilliant mix of high and low comedy, and of course some of Cole Porter's better-known songs--"So in Love," "I Hate Men," Too Darn Hot," "Always True to You (In My Fashion)"--Kiss Me, Kate remains a funny, zesty hall of mirrors. Hard as you may try to find a fly in the ointment, there's no fault with the cast either--Patricia Morison, for instance, is a perfectly petulant Lilli Vanessi. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Review: Masterfully written
"Kiss Me, Kate" is a masterfully written show. The interplay between the stage and backstage is superb. The variety of music, from the near-classical "Were Thine That Special Face," to the comic "Brush Up Your Shakespeare," with the more traditional Broadway sound of "Wunderbar," holds the listener's interest throughout.
But, about this recording--
Who else but Alfred Drake could carry the role of Fred Graham? Patricia Morrison, properly shrewish as Lilli. The flirty voice of Lisa Kirk. Even Harold Lang, who is not the greatest singer ever to hit Broadway.
Wonderfully written, wonderfully performed, wonderfully recorded and remastered!
Customer Review: Wish I had seen the actual Show!!!!
I wish I was about 20 when Kiss Me Kate opened so I could have witnessed this body shaking, gut bursting work of Cole Porter. This is the first time I've heard it. I can still feel the voices and music pumping through my blood stream with pleasure. You have to get it to get it so get it. You'll be more than greatful you did. Pardon me, I'm going to listen to it again!
Quo Vadis
Quo Vadis
Editorial Reviews -
"Welcome to Nero's House of Women" greets a concubine to a slave girl, Lygia (Deborah Kerr). Later this self-same greeter reveals that she, too, like Lygia, is really a fellow Christian neophyte. And it's that mixture of tawdry Hollywood sex and a strong Christian message that makes this film an enjoyable "gentiles and gladiators" flick. Marcus Vinicius returns home after conquering the Britons to find that Rome is infected with a crazy new sect called Christians and that his beloved emperor Nero (Peter Ustinov, roly-poly and wicked) has become increasingly wacky. Marcus tries his centurion wiles on Lygia, and she's smitten, but she's also a Christian convert and begs Marcus not to force her to choose between him and her god. The Christians have a tough go of it, with martyrdom in the Coliseum as punishment for belonging to the new religion in town. Though three hours long, director Mervyn LeRoy's film always has something going on. It could help you enjoyably kill any rainy Sunday afternoon. --Keith Simanton [refers to the VHS edition] ++++ This officially licensed release from South Korea is in ENGLISH with optional (removable) English and Korean subtitles.
Customer Review: Restored DVD On The Way
I too have been waiting a long time for a restored DVD of this classic and inspiring film. The wait is finally over and expect a fully restored Ultra-Resolution DVD set 4th Qtr 2008. The reason for the delay has been the poor quality of the source film that has required extensive work.
Customer Review: Outstanding Film, Poor DVD Quality
Quo Vadis is one of the best films of the 1950s and arguably among the greatest released to date. The verbal sparring among Petronius (Leo Glenn), Nero (Peter Ustinov) and Tigellinus (Ralph Truman) would by itself be the backbone of a great movie. Unfortunately, the world currently lacks a quality copy of the film available to the general public. The Korean copy has several problems with loosing audio sync.

The Matrix Revolutions
The Matrix Revolutions
Customer Review: Revolutionary
Here is the soundtrack to the final movie in the Matrix trilogy. Don Davis is a master, and Juno Reactor are masters of what they do, which is electronica. Put them together and you have nothing less than a masterpiece. I know this is not the first time that techno has been fused with classical orchestra, but it is always great. This is all score, with the exception of the one song that was in the "club scene", but that just blends in so nicely with the rest of the music that it doesn't even sound awkward. The last track is also the greatest. This album ends with a bang. If you have enjoyed these movies as well as the music and soundtracks then you will enjoy this.
Customer Review: Rounds out the edges...
Wow, a lot of reviewers have had a lot to say about this one. Well, I'm not going to say a lot because so much has already been said, just know that as far as scores go, this is one of the best, and even though I really wanted another hard rock/techno infused powerhouse of an album, the few songs provided by Pale 3 and Juno Reactor are enough to satisfy me (In My Head is just freaking awesome). Don Davis is genius here and provides a beautifully written piece of work that will burrow itself inside your head and stay with you. The final track Navras is reason enough to own this perfect compliment to a highly regarded franchise and serves as a nice way to round out this trilogy, not only of film but of music.
For Women Only: What You Need to Know about the Inner Lives of Men
For Women Only: What You Need to Know about the Inner Lives of Men
What’s going on in a man’s mind? From their early days, every woman has struggled to understand why males behave the way they do. Even long-married women who think they understand men have only scratched the surface. Beneath a man’s rugged exterior is an even more rugged, unmapped terrain. What bestselling author Shaunti Feldhahn’s research reveals about the inner lives of men will open women’s eyes to what the men in their lifeâboyfriends, brothers, husbands, and sonsâare really thinking and feeling. Men want to be understood, but they’re afraid to âfreak outâ the women they love by confessing what is happening inside their heads. This book will guide women in how to provide the loving support that modern men want and need.
The Truth About His Inner Life
He Desperately Wants You to Know
What's going on in there? Ever been totally confused by something your man has said or done? Want to understand his secret desires and fears, his daily battles that you know nothing about?
In a woman-to-woman conversation you’ll never forget, Shaunti Feldhahn takes you beneath the surface into the inner lives of men. This book is about the things we just don’t âget’ about guys. With findings from a groundbreaking national survey and personal interviews of over one thousand men, For Women Only is full of eye-opening revelations you need to not only understand the man in your life, but to support and love him in the way he needs to be loved. Grounded in biblical hope, you will discover how to love your man for who he really isânot who you think he is.
Story Behind the Book
I had no idea how clueless I was about men until I interviewed a bunch of them for my last novel. Initially, I just wanted a little insight so I could write my main (male) character. But pretty soon I found myself astonished, over and over again blurting out, âThat’s what you’re thinking?â So I did more interviews. After the novel hit shelves, dozens of women told me they also had been astonished by what I included. Clearly I wasn’t the only one who needed more insight on this!
To lay the groundwork for this nonfiction book, I wrote out the half-dozen things from these interviews that had most surprised meâthings that appeared to be universal to most menâthat women desperately needed to know. I conducted a professional national survey of men to test my findings. Yepâthe survey substantiated every single one. These findings are fascinatingâand they have already changed my life and marriage. I can’t wait to share them!
Customer Review: For women only
Wow...Wonderful book. Opened my eyes, I wish that I read this book on my wedding day! My marriage would not have been in crisis mode for years. I am so thankful to Shaunti for writing a book that is based on surveys and conversations from men - I highly recommend this book. My life, husband and marriage has truly been blessed by reading, understanding, respecting, honoring and loving my husband.
Question? What is your husband's number 1 need? Did you know that approximately 81% men answering her survey stated this #1 need is not being met.
Customer Review: Marriage is work!
My marriage was falling apart, I left my husband and came back home to Louisiana to be closer to my family. My husband followed and began getting counseling at a local Pentecostal church. His life began to show significant change...I new he was no doing it alone, but that God had taken out his heart of stone and replaced it with a heart of flesh! I had always heard of such stories of how God transformed people and made them new, but never really thought that my husband would ever be one! He was prideful, boasting always, arrogant, rude and constantly on the edge of exploding. I was on pens and needles around him. I knew I had to save my children from a life of chaos and confusion. I have always been very close to Jesus. I guess I just couldn't see him as the great miracle worker in my own life, only in others around me. He is truly the master crafts man. Worthy of all Praise and honor! God saved my Marriage. We are now both in counseling together and we couldn't be happier. I have found that I was to blame for a number of problems in my marriage as well. God has began to open my eyes to many different areas he wants to change within me. My husband and I communicate now and always put God first in our lives no matter what! Without God in the equation...all is lost. Back to the book: I received it during one of our counseling meeting. It has been a real eye opener for me. So many things that I thought where not really important(to me), ARE IMPROTANT TO HIM(my husband). If it is important to him...it should be important to me as well. I would recommend this book to women everywhere, in all walks of life. Young and single, married and happy, married and miserable...take this book and read it. Then give it to someone you know to enjoy and have them pass it on too.
Thanks for listening,
Brandy
